German Dative preposition “mit” with examples

“Mit” (with) is a dative German preposition. Dative prepositions are associated with dative case of the sentence.

Before we begin, let us recall dative articles and pronouns.

Dative articles

Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural

Indefinite articles Ein-em Ein-er Ein-es -

Dative pronouns

Personal pronouns Dative form with “mit”
Ich (I) mit mir (with me)
Wir (we) mit uns (with us)
Du (You) mit dir (with you)
Ihr (You) mit euch (with you)
Er (He) mit ihm (with him)
Sie (She) mit ihr (with her)
Es (It) mit ihm (with it)

Examples on German preposition “mit” (with)

  1. Mit dem Vater (Masculine) = With the father
  2. Mit der Mutter (Feminine) = With the mother
  3. Mit das Buch (Neuter) = With the book
  4. Mit den Familie (Plural) =With the family
  1. Peter kommt mit meinem Vater (Masculine) = Peter is coming with my father.
  2. Peter kommt mit meiner Mutter (Feminine) = Peter is coming with my mother.
  3. Peter kommt mit meinem Buch (Neuter) = Peter is coming with my book.
  4. Peter kommt mit meinen Familie (Plural) = Peter is coming with my family.

  2. Ich werde mit dir spielen. = I will play with you.
  3. Tanzt du mit mir ? = Will you dance with me ?
  4. Kannst du mit mir Deutsch sprechen ? = Can you speak German with me ?
  5. Ich spreche Deutsch mit meinem Bruder ?  = I speak German with my brother.
  6. Monika geht mit ihm= Monika is going with him.
  7. Ich ging in den Park mit ihr. = I went with her to the park.

    “Monika kommt mit mir” – Please correct me if I am wrong- But this sentence is an Akkusative, hence it should use mich and not mir.
